‘That Was My Economy’: Barack Obama Debunks Trump’s Record
Former president rallies for Democrats in Pittsburgh Pa
Former president Barack Obama demolished Donald Trump Thursday — particularly the notion that Trump was good for the US economy — as Obama rallied for Vice President Kamala Harris.
Obama jabbed at the man who followed him in the White House in Pittsburgh Pa, in what was billed as the first stop on a barnstorming tour of swing states by the popular 44th president, in support of Harris and her running mate, Minnesota Gov Tim Walz.
Obama mostly kept it light-hearted as he encouraged people to vote for the Democratic ticket this fall.
Obama especially took aim at the idea that Trump was a good steward of the US economy during Trump’s four years in office.
“And the reason some people think, ‘Well, I don’t know, I remember that economy when he first came in being pretty good,’ — yeah, it was pretty good because it was my economy,” Obama declared, to the cheers and applause of rallygoers. “We had had 75 straight months of job growth that I handed over to him. It wasn’t something he did.
“I spent eight years cleaning up the mess that the Republicans had left me the last time,” he added, to further cheering and applause. “So just in case everybody has a hazy memory, he didn’t — he didn’t do nothing. Except those big tax cuts.”
Obama segued into what Trump would do if elected to another term as president.
“His other big economic plan now is to slap tariffs on everything from food to TVs. Now, understand what tariffs are,” he said. “Anything that’s that’s made elsewhere and comes here, you slap extra money on top of it.
“And if other countries are cheating, in some cases it makes sense because you want to have a fair playing field. But what he’s proposing is basically a Trump sales tax that could cost the average family almost $4,000 a year,” Obama added. “So, if you’re concerned about higher prices, that is not the way to get lower prices, that’s going to come out of your pockets. You think prices are high now? Donald Trump’s message basically is, ‘You ain’t seen nothing yet.’ All right, so that — that’s as far as you can tell, that’s his plan, right? Because it’s not written down anywhere.”
Obama also outlined the economic policies Harris wants to enact, if elected president — which led to an uproarious interaction with someone at the rally.
It began with him noting that the vice president wants a $6,000 tax credit during the first year of a child’s life for new parents.
“Because I don’t have to tell a lot of you, raising kids is hard. And she wants to make it easier to afford stuff like a crib or a car seat, or diapers,” Obama said. “I remember buying that. I remember the first time I went to the store right after Malia was born. I was like, ‘What? That’s how much diapers cost?’ I remember changing diapers. Do you think Donald Trump ever changed a diaper?”
Someone at the rally shouted back, “His own!”
“I almost said that, but I decided I shouldn’t say it,” Obama replied back, humorously.
