‘The Confident Liar Is Always Going to Win’: Scrutiny of Biden’s Debate Performance Continues
President's face-off against Donald Trump at issue
Days later, the news media and political commentators continue to analyze President Biden’s performance in last Thursday’s presidential debate.
Biden rattled voters — and many Democrats — with a performance during the face-off against Donald Trump that often appeared halting and confused.
Although Biden came back the following day with a fiery appearance alongside First Lady Dr Jill Biden in North Carolina.
“The fact of the matter is, I’ve made it very clear, ever since the morning after — that is Friday morning — that I think people ought to just chill out,” said Rep James Clyburn (D-SC), a staunch ally and confidant of Biden’s. “This is something that denotes what can happen any time a sitting president takes it upon himself to debate. It has happened historically. I saw it happen to Ronald Reagan, it happened to Barack Obama, and now it has happened to Joe Biden.
“When you have been running the country as he has been for 3 1/2 years, faced with all of the issues that he is faced with, you don’t have time to sit aside and make up stories about the past or to forget about what is going on around you. You’ve got to face your job,” Clyburn added. “He has been doing that. And so, for him, to go into preparation and what I have been calling this, a classic example of preparation overload, I just think that there should have been much less preparation for this debate and much more activism in his job.”
Biden likely always would have struggled against Trump, given the ease that the convicted felon and former president spreads falsehoods and disinformation, according to Brian Stelter, an author and journalist who is the former chief media reporter at CNN.
“I mean, look, if you’re in a battle between someone who lies really confidently versus someone who mostly tells the truth, but really incoherently, the confident liar is always going to win,” he said. “And I think many millions of Americans, who don’t want to see Trump re-elected, were yelling at their TVs wanting Biden to fight back harder, wanting to see an actual debate, an actual fight. They didn’t get that. They came away disappointed. And it makes me wonder if there will be any more debates at all.”
Mika Brzezinski, the co-host of MSNBC’s Morning Joe, and a staunch defender of Biden’s, also compared the president to his 2024 opponent.
“By the way, Biden likes to tell people, ‘Don’t compare me to the almighty, compare me to the alternative.’ Let’s take a quick moment to look at the current alternative. Not a hypothetical imagined new Democratic candidate, the actual current alternative who was across from Joe Biden at Thursday’s debate: Donald Trump,” she said on the program Monday morning. “The man who incited a political coup against our government and who indicates he will not accept the results of the 2024 election if he loses again. The convicted felon who faces three more indictments, the man who was found liable for sexual assault assault, the man found liable for massive fraud, the man who brags about having ended a woman’s right to abortion health care, a decision that is killing women and babies and causing immeasurable and preventable agony for women across the country. The man whose tax proposals could cripple the economy according to over a dozen Nobel Prize economists. The man who would end key global alliances. The man who has promised Rhett retribution against his perceived political enemies. The man, who on a regular basis, makes no sense at all.
“When he sounds crazy and slurs his words and talks about batteries and sharks, why aren’t there calls for Trump to drop out? Where are they? In the Philadelphia inquirer, their editorial board did take a stand. They wrote quote, ‘to serve his country, Donald Trump should leave the race,’” Brzezinski added. “There’s one, but there are the other editorial heads, leaders who were so rocked the other night, who see Trump as so unfit that he should leave the race where are they?”
