By striking down the nearly 50-year-old precedent of Roe v Wade, the US Supreme Court by its own admission has turned the matter of abortion rights back to the states.
And while immediate abortion bans going into effect in states like Arkansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, and South Dakota are capturing headlines — and rightfully so — some blue states are heading in the opposite direction to secure access to abortion services for American women.
Such is the case in California, where Democratic Gov Gavin Newsom also took swift action Friday to make his state a “safe haven.”
“Abortion is legal in California. It will remain that way. I just signed a bill that makes our state a safe haven for women across the nation. We will not cooperate with any states that attempt to prosecute women or doctors for receiving or providing reproductive care,” tweeted Newsom, who just last year easily survived a high-profile attempt by Republicans to recall him from office.
Some anti-abortion Republicans have openly mused about also enacting laws making it illegal for pregnant women in their states to cross state lines in order to obtain legal abortions where it remains legal.
In reply to Newsom's announcement, Democrat Rebecca Huffman, of Ft Wayne, Ind., offered another solution to enable women to access needed services.
“I think one of the Best ideas I’ve heard is to set up clinics on Indian reservations. The federal government can’t touch them. If they attached them to their beautiful casinos they have plenty of money to hire a good doctors and have the top of the line Surgery platforms,” she posted.
