‘The Gentlelady Should Recognize A Doctor as A Doctor’: For Greene Another Big Hearing Leads to a Clapback
Raskin schools Georgia Republican during Fauci hearing, adding swipe against Trump
For the second time in just a few weeks, far-right congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene tried to make cheap political points on-camera during a high-profile hearing.
And for the second time, she’s repaid — and shutdown — for her antics.
The Georgia Republican attempted to belittle and humiliate Dr Anthony Fauci, who advised two presidents during the COVID-19 pandemic, by refusing to address the longtime federal public health official with his title of “doctor.”
Only to be rebuked not only by a top Democrat on the House subcommittee, but the panel’s Republican chairman as well.
The Monday session was the first time Dr Fauci testified publicly since he retired from government after a distinguished career at the head of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and adviser to both President Biden and Donald Trump during the deadly pandemic.
Just weeks after she was rebuked as a “bleach blonde, bad-built, butch body” in response to an insult she lobbed at the personal appearance of a colleague, Greene got schooled once more.
Dr Fauci, who became part of a variety of right-wing conspiracy theories about the pandemic, faced tough grilling by Republicans on the subcommittee.
But Greene wanted to make it particularly personal, berating Fauci by saying, “Do the American people deserve to be abused like that, Mr. Fauci, because you‘re not ‘Doctor,’ you’re ‘Mr. Fauci’ in my few minutes.”
She also tried to prevent him from actually answering her question.
Rep Jamie Raskin, of Maryland, ranking Democrat on the full House Oversight Committee, broke in and directed an official point-of-order at subcommittee chairman Rep Brad Wenstrup (R-Ohio).
After Raskin and Greene tangled, Wenstrup admonished Greene saying, “The gentlelady should recognize the doctor as a doctor.”
Raskin then spoke up, apologizing to Fauci for Greene’s behavior.
“Some of my colleagues seem to want to drag your name through the mud,” Raskin said. “They’re treating you, Dr Fauci, like a convicted felon.
“Actually, you probably wish they were treating you like a convicted felon. They treat convicted felons with love and admiration. Some of them blindly worship convicted felons,” he added, taking a swipe at Republicans who have been loudly defending Trump since he was convicted of all 34 felony counts against him in his recent criminal trial in New York.
