‘The Late, Great Hannibal Lecter’: Trump Praises Fictional Killer at NJ Rally
Republican goes on bizarre riff over character from 1991 film
Donald Trump used a rare day off from his days in a New York courthouse over the weekend to hold a campaign rally in deep-blue New Jersey, where he went off on a bizarre riff praising a fictional serial killer.
Trump’s running for president at the same time as standing trial on criminal charges that he falsified business records ahead of the 2016 election to hide hush-money payments to porn star to conceal an alleged extramarital affair with that porn star to keep that knowledge from voters.
But Trump traveled to the beachfront community of Wildwood, NJ, for his latest rally.
However, during a typical xenophobic rant about immigrants in the United States, Trump tore into a bizarre riff singing the praises of Hannibal Lecter, the serial killer cannibal from the 1991 film, Silence of the Lambs played by Anthony Hopkins.
Trump was going on his baseless claims that foreign nations were sending former residents of mental institutions to live in the United States when he veered off to begin praising Lecter.
He almost seemed to be doing some odd stream-of-consciousness venting.
“An insane asylum is a mental institution on steroids. Silence of the Lambs. Has anyone ever seen Silence of the Lambs? The late, great Hannibal Lecter. He's a wonderful man,” Trump said. “He oftentimes would have a friend for dinner. Remember the last scene? ‘Excuse me, I'm about to have a friend for dinner,’ as this poor doctor walks by.
“‘I’m about to have a friend for dinner.’ Congratulations, the late, great Hannibal Lecter,” he added.
