The Russian Army’s Performance in Ukraine Has Been ‘Pretty Dysfunctional’ Since Day One, Ambassador Says
Ukrainian forces will deal with enemy jamming, she adds
The announcement that Russia's once-feared group of private mercenaries would be withdrawing from the battle for one of Ukraine's most-fought-for cities just proves the “dysfunction” of the Russian military, according to Ukraine's ambassador to the United States.
The Wagner Group has said its troops would walk away from Bakhmut, a city in Ukraine's east, on May 10 — just a few days away — as the head of the organization blasted Russia's leadership for issues like a lack of ammunition.
The group made the announcement in a video from its leader, Yevgeny Prigozhin.
The decision by Prigozhin and the Wagner Group to walk away from the fierce fighting for the eastern city of Bakhmut just underscores the state of the Russian military, according to Ambassador Oksana Markarova.
“Well, you know, they have been pretty dysfunctional since the Day One. We all remember spoke about how this is the second-largest army, and they failed miserably on the battlefield since then,” Markarova said. “It’s very difficult for us. The destruction they caused us is enormous. There are cities destroyed, people killed, but they were not able to achieve any of their objectives.”
Meanwhile, Ukrainian forces will adapt to Russian troops jamming U.S.-provided rocket systems, the ambassador said.
“Whatever they do desperately looking for some remedies. They actually suggest, think about the justice because this is the main word for what will happen not only to [Russian leader Vladimir] Putin and everyone who made the decision, but, you know, whatever they will try, we are ready, and we will keep fighting. We will not surrender,” she said. “And our armed forces and our great president have shown again and again and again that we are very creative, and we are very resilient, and we will bravely defend our country.”
