‘There Is No Evidence of Any Wrongdoing by the President’
Democrats pushback against Kevin McCarthy's suggestion of Biden impeachment
Republican House Speaker Kevin McCarthy has suggested impeaching President Biden.
Only problem: No one even has a credible allegation of wrongdoing by Biden, which has House Democrats and others pushing back against McCarthy's notion.
McCarthy said that Republican lawmakers may consider an impeachment inquiry of the president over unproven claims of financial misconduct.
In remarks Tuesday at the Capitol, McCarthy said the questions House Republicans are raising about the Biden family finances need to be investigated. So far, he acknowledged, the House’s probes have not proven any wrongdoing, but an impeachment inquiry “allows Congress to get the information to be able to know the truth.”
Democrats immediately began condemning any suggestions of a Biden impeachment given that there's no true indication that the president has done anything wrong.
They say that any impeachment of Biden is politically motivated to retaliate against Donald Trump's two impeachments.
“My reaction is: Where’s the evidence? There is no evidence of any wrongdoing by the president. And Mr. McCarthy knows that. This is all — everything in, upside down,” said Rep Madeleine Dean (D-Pa). “Because the former president who was so corrupt and crude and based, engaged in such criminal activity, now we’re going to try to deflect or McCarthy is going to try to deflect and try to drag Mr. Biden into this.”
Dean ticked off a list of recent accomplishments under Democratic leadership, including the bipartisan infrastructure law, the CHIPS and Science Act, as well as the Inflation Reduction Act.
“Last night I had a telephone town hall which was really informative. I love the opportunity to talk to my constituents. We had more than 6,500 folks on the call. And what they tell me is they have a growing confidence in the economy as jobs are back, inflation is cooling, manufacturing jobs, 800,000 created,” the congresswoman said. “But they have an exhaustion with the low-base place this criminal, corrupt former president has taken our country. So we’re at a time of great contrast: Democrats leading, investing in America, and Republicans chasing conspiracy theories.”
Republicans are ham-handedly trying to find anything to politically embarrass Biden ahead of next year's election, according to David Alexrod, who helped run Barack Obama's presidential campaign.
“If there is wrongdoing, it should be pursued, it should be dealt with. But that’s not what this is. We’ve had the Republicans stumbling around like so many Inspector Clouseaus for a year and a half, looking for something — anything — to impugn the president. They haven’t found it.
“And now it’s like, ‘We'll impeach, details to be determined.’ You know, to quote the great Logan Roy, ‘These are not serious people,’” he added. “But it is serious what they’re doing, and it is seriously damaging to our democracy.”
