There’s Strong Backing for Ukraine in Congress from Both Parties, Security Adviser Says
Commitment to end invasion bipartisan, Sullivan says
Despite some noisy lawmakers on the far-right, support for US aid to embattled Ukraine remains strong, according to President Biden's national security adviser.
Republican presidential hopefuls like Donald Trump and Florida Gov Ron DeSantis have each expressed skepticism about continued US support for Ukraine’s battle against Russia's ongoing invasion.
Meanwhile, some far-right members of Congress — including Rep Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga) — also have called for an end to that aid to Ukraine.
The United States has provided more than $42 billion in security assistance since President Biden took office, to demonstrate a steadfast commitment to Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Ukraine has been fighting to repulse Russian forces since Russian leader Vladimir Putin ordered the full-scale invasion in February 2022.
“Well, first, the American people have really hung in there and supported the Ukrainian people. You can see it reflected in opinion polls even today how much the American people continue to have a strong degree of backing for what we’re doing to support Ukraine,” said White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan. “Second, if you look at the Republican Party, there is a small cadre of Republicans who stand up and say we should stop helping Ukraine in the face of Russian aggression, but the Republican leader in the Senate, Mitch McConnell, did a joint statement with the Senate majority leader, Chuck Schumer, in which they both said that Ukraine’s assistance to Ukraine would not be subject to the debt agreement that was reached between President Biden and congressional Republicans.
“Senior Republicans in the House have said the same thing. So I actually think that there was strong backing for Ukraine in the Congress, not just among Democrats, but among Republicans as well,” Sullivan added. “And, therefore, we believe that we can back up the statement that we will give Ukraine everything it needs for as long as it takes.”
