‘These People Want To Cheat’: Trump Continues To Lie About 2020 Election
Republican perpetuates “Big Lie,” even after vowing unity
Days after the attempt on his life and following his own vow to seek greater national unity in the run-up to the November election, Donald Trump’s still looking backwards and lying about the last presidential election of 2020.
Trump publicly joined his political foe, President Biden, in seeking calm and a lower national temperature following a shooting over the weekend at his campaign rally in rural Pennsylvania that marked the first assassination attempt of a US president or presidential candidate in decades.
Despite the lip service for unity, however, Trump still obsesses over his loss to Biden four years ago and continued to spread dangerous falsehoods and disinformation in remarks Tuesday at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee Wis.
Trump has been spreading a set of falsehoods about his defeat in 2020 since the days after that election, dishonestly claiming that Biden and Democrats stole the election from Trump through widespread fraud.
Those falsehoods came to be known as the “Big Lie,” and became the deception that powered the efforts by Trump and extreme supporters to keep him in power illegally and ultimately fueled the violent January 6, 2021, attack on the US Capitol.
Trump returned to those deceptive themes this week as he officially accepted the 2024 Republican nomination for president.
And, Trump promised that if elected this year, he will enact voting policies based on these lies.
“I believe that we’re going to have four of the greatest years in the history of our country. I will once and for all secure our elections. We're going to go to paper ballots, we’re going to have same-day voting, voter ID. We’re going to do it properly,” the former president said. “We’re going to have good, secure, beautiful elections. We never want what happened in 2020 to happen again.
“But until then, Republicans must win and we must use every appropriate tool available to beat the Democrats. They are destroying our country,” he added. “Whether you vote early, absentee by mail, or in person, we are going to protect the vote. That’s the most important day we have to do, is protect the vote. Keep your eyes open, because these people want to cheat and they do cheat, and frankly, it’s the only thing they do well.”
