‘They Should Have Him Do Stuff Like that More Often’: Fox Reporter Impressed with Biden Performance
Feisty president hits back at special counsel's jabs at his memory
Clearly angry at attempts to paint him as an “elderly man with a poor memory,” President Biden gave a spirited rebuttal which even impressed a Fox News reporter.
Biden appeared Thursday at a hastily arranged White House news conference, just hours after the special counsel investigating the president’s handling of federal government documents issued his report.
While special counsel Robert Hur announced that Biden should not be criminally charged for his handling of those documents, Hur characterized Biden as an “elderly man with a poor memory,” in an eyebrow-raising report.
Hur, a Republican, was appointed by Attorney General Merrick Garland, to look into instances in which Biden wrongly retained government documents after leaving office as vice president.
Hur, who was appointed by former president Donald Trump to serve as US attorney for Maryland, cited the shortage of evidence, but also how Biden would present himself to a jury.
“We have also considered that, at trial, Mr. Biden would likely present himself to a jury, as he did during our interview of him, as a sympathetic, well-meaning, elderly man with a poor memory,” Hur wrote.
While he welcomed Hur’s announcement of no charges, Biden argued with assertions about his memory.
The president even mixed it up with a Fox News reporter who often needles Biden — which actually earned admiration from that same reporter.
Steve Doocy, the White House reporter for the right-wing network, asked Biden, “How bad is your memory and can you continue as president?”
“My memory is so bad, I let you speak,” Biden shot back.
Later appearing on-camera on Fox News, Doocy admitted that he was impressed with Biden’s dig.
“I wouldn’t say he seemed antagonistic. Whatever it is you guys can turn around the tape if you want to play it later, his response to me when I asked him how bad his memory is and he said, ‘It’s bad enough that I let you talk.’ That is funny,” Doocy said. “If that is how he’s going to respond to questions like that, they should have him do stuff like that more often.”
