‘They’re Misogynistic Pigs’: Liz Cheney Torches Trump and Vance
Former Republican congresswoman supports Ted Cruz’s Democratic opponent
Talking about her announcement this week that she’ll vote for the Democratic ticket for president this fall, former Republican congresswoman Liz Cheney lit into Donald Trump and his running mate.
The one-time lawmaker from Wyoming also revealed that, not only will her father — who served as vice president to Republican President George W Bush — also support Vice President Kamala Harris and Minnesota Gov Tim Walz, that she backs the Democrat running in Texas to unseat Sen Ted Cruz.
Cheney, who once was the third-highest ranking Republican in the House before breaking with Trump and helping lead the investigation into the violent January 6, 2021 insurrection, went public this week with the news that she and her father, former vice president Dick Cheney, both will vote for the Harris-Walz ticket.
She discussed that news in an appearance in Texas with journalist Mark Leibovich.
“Look, I think that, you know, every, every opportunity, that Donald Trump gets to show the American people who he is. He pretty clearly — and look, his running mate is doing this too, I mean, you know. This is my diplomatic way of saying it. They’re misogynistic pigs,” Cheney said, referring to Trump’s vice-presidential pick, Republican Sen JD Vance. “I think that will become clear. I mean, I think that Vice President Harris has demonstrated, you know, particularly if you watch the speech we were talking about at the convention, a focus on seriousness and substance and policy.
“And I think that for people who sort of say, well, you know, you have conservatives who might say, ‘Well, I’m thinking of voting for Trump because he’s a conservative’ he is not a conservative,” added Cheney, who lost her seat in a Republican primary in 2022. “And when you look at the contrast in terms of policies, for example, when it comes to things like NATO, when it comes to things like the support of Ukraine, when you look at the proposals that he’s made to impose massive tariffs, for example, you know, I think that there there are a whole range of policy issues that raise very serious concerns.
“But, sometimes you hear from Trump supporters that, you know, they want to just let Trump be Trump. And like, I endorse that, like let that guy go, because the more people see him and the more, you know, frankly, at the end of the day, I think that women around this country, like, we’ve had enough. We’ve had enough,” she said.
Referring to the decision by her father — who also worked for Republican administrations back to Gerald Ford’s — to support the Democrats this year, Cheney said: “Dick Cheney will be voting for Kamala Harris.”
“Okay Wow. Words I never expected to hear,” Leibovich quipped, with Cheney responding, “Yeah.”
Liz Cheney also made it clear that she not only supports Democrats at the top of the ticket this year.
Referring to the reelection effort by Trump ally, Sen Ted Cruz, Cheney said that she backs Democratic Rep Colin Allred’s campaign to defeat him.
“Colin Allred is somebody I served with in the House and somebody who really, when you think about the kind of leaders our country needs, and going to this point about you might not agree on every policy position, but we need people who are going to serve in good faith — we need people who are honorable public servants. And in this race, that is Colin Allred. So I’ll be working on his behalf,” she said, to cheering and applause from the audience at the event.
