‘This Executive Order Threatens People’s Lives’: Md. AG Condemns Trump’s Trans Policy
New president targeted transgender Americans on Day One
The attorney general of the state of Maryland has come out strongly against an executive order Donald Trump signed on his first day in office aimed at transgender Americans.
Trump, who campaigned vociferously against transgender Americans, signed the sweeping order which limits the rights of one of the nation’s smallest minorities.
Estimates put the number of transgender Americans at about 1.6 million people, or about less than 1 percent of the population ages 13 and older.
Despite their small numbers, Trump chose to make transgender Americans an issue on his first day, along with undocumented migrants and other right-wing issues.
Maryland Attorney General Anthony Brown quickly stood on the side of transgender people in his state.
“Yesterday President Trump signed an executive order declaring that the United States only recognizes two sexes and rejects a person’s gender identity. This is a decision that ignores the humanity and reality of transgender Americans across our State and nation,” Brown said in a statement released Tuesday. “The president’s mandate limits federal funding for transition health services and requires federal prisons and shelters to segregate incarcerated people, sexual assault survivors, and migrants by their sex, not their gender identities.
“Make no mistake: this Executive Order threatens people’s lives,” the statement added. “The Maryland Office of the Attorney General will protect all Marylanders – especially members of marginalized communities — and wants transgender residents of our State to know that they belong, they matter, and our Office will fight for their rights and safety.”
Maryland has protected transgender residents in state civil rights law for more than a decade. Gov Wes Moore (D) affirmed and expanded those protections with his own gubernatorial executive order in 2023.
