‘This Is What MAGA Does’: Having Lost a Primary, Congresswoman Calls Election ‘Rigged’
Democrat Katie Porter lost California Senate race Tuesday
A popular Democratic congresswoman is coming under fire on social media for suggesting US elections are “rigged,” following her loss in California’s primary for a seat in the US Senate.
Rep Katie Porter, known for scolding the powerful during congressional hearings with her famous white board, is causing a political firestorm after arguing the election she lost Tuesday was unfair.
Porter failed to win one of top two spots to move onto the November election to fill the seat once held by Sen Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif), who died last year.
Rather, Porter’s House colleague, Rep Adam Schiff (D-Calif), and Republican Steve Garvey will face off in November to fill that seat for a full, six-year term.
Porter is suggesting that her loss was unfair.
The congresswoman, first elected to Congress in 2018, posted a statement online.
“‘Rigged’ means manipulated by dishonest means,” the statement said. “A few billionaires spent $10 million+ on attack ads against me, including an ad rated ‘false’ by an independent fact-checker. That is dishonest means to manipulate an outcome. I said ‘rigged by billionaires’ and our politics are — in fact — manipulated by big dark money. Defending democracy means calling that out. At no time have I ever undermined the vote count and election process in [California], which are beyond reproach.”
Influential voices on the left expressed their displeasure in comments.
“Congresswoman, this is so sour and petty. You’re better than this,” said prominent writer Charlotte Clymer.
Wrote influencer Ryan Shead, “You’re losing a lot of support playing this game.”
And the well-known influencer and blogger who goes by “JoJoFromJerz” wrote: “What are you doing? This is what MAGA does. You’re smarter than this. Aren’t you?”
