Tim Walz Gave A Speech, but His Son, Gus, Stole the Show
Minnesota governor nominated as VP pick on historic ticket
Minnesota Gov Tim Walz gave a rousing speech Wednesday evening as delegates to the Democratic National Convention officially nominated him as their candidate for vice president of the United States.
But it was his son, Gus, who was the Star of the show.
Delegates in Chicago gave Walz the votes to officially run with the surging campaign of Vice President Kamala Harris, who had already secured the nod as the party’s presidential nominee.
Walz’s nominating speech was, at once, folksy and biographical — but also drew sharp contrasts with the Republican opponents he and Harris will face in the November election.
“You know, you might not know it, but I haven't given a lot of big speeches like this. But I have given a lot of pep talks,” said Walz, a former high school football coach. “So let me finish with this, team. It's the fourth quarter. We're down a field goal. But we're on offense and we've got the ball. We're driving down the field. And boy, do we have the right team. Kamala Harris is tough. Kamala Harris is experienced. And Kamala Harris is ready.
“Our job, our job, our job, our job for everyone watching, is to get in the trenches and do the blocking and tackling. One inch at a time. One yard at a time. One phone call at a time. One door knock at a time. One $5 donation at a time,” he added. “Look, we've got 76 days. That's nothing. There'll be time to sleep when you're dead. We're going to leave it [all] on the field. That's how we'll keep moving forward. That's how we'll turn the page on Donald Trump.”
Delegates cheered their approval for Walz and his speech, but it was the reaction of young Gus Walz in the arena watching his dad, that went viral on social media.
Gus, a high school student and younger child of Walz and his wife, Gwen, became highly emotional and kept repeating, “That’s my dad.”
Reactions online were immediate and heartfelt, such as this post: “Gus Walz is all of us! I'm not crying. You're crying 😢 😭😭 "I love you." That's my dad." How proud!! My heart melted, and yes, I was crying, too. #DNCConvention2024 #HarrisWalz2024 #America”
