Trevor Noah: Attack Ads Should Be Illegal
“Just tell me what you will do if you want me to vote. Don’t tell me about the other person,” Comedy Central host explains
The popular host of television's The Daily Show made a bombshell of a proposal this week in his monologue: political attack advertising — which has proliferated in recent decades — should be illegal.
Trevor Noah made his suggestion on the Wednesday night edition of the Comedy Central program which he is set to walk away from soon, after seven years there.
“You know, if you ask me, honestly, I think attack ads should be illegal. Yeah,” he said to cheering and applause from the studio audience. “I mean it. I think attack ads should be illegal. Not campaign ads, not campaign ads — attack ads. I will tell you why. First of all, I think it is because they only drive up polarization and hate, that is what they do, right? And secondly, politicians should be earning your vote by telling you what they are going to do, not just by sh*tting on other candidates.”
After more cheering and applause, the host added that, of political advertising, “Just tell me what you will do if you want me to vote. Don’t tell me about the other person.”
Political advertising has increasingly relied on such so-called “attack ads” in the last quarter century or so, as candidates and campaigns have thought it wise to try to define their opponents in the eyes of voters.
