Trump Back to Bullying Canada Over ‘Golden Dome’ Defense
US president returns to pushing nation to submit to become the “51st state”
After seeming to roll over on his incessant demands just weeks ago that Canada surrender its sovereignty to become the “51st state” within the United States, Donald Trump was back at it this week regarding participation in the so-called “Golden Dome” defense system.
Trump early in his second presidency directed the US Defense Department to develop a “Golden Dome” missile-defense system, recalling Israel’s own “Iron Dome,” and the much earlier, Reagan-era “Strategic Defense Initiative,” or SDI.
The Trump system, if fully developed and operational, would be a system of satellites in orbit that would protect from incoming missile attack.
Canadian officials recently confirmed that they have entered into talks with the United States to join the Golden Dome program, on a partnership basis.
But rather than take the opportunity to develop better bilateral relations with Canada, Trump returned to the bellicose language that marked his approach to Canada since the 2024 US elections, insisting that it give up its independence to become the “51st state.”
Trump only seemed to abandon such aspirations early in May when he met with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, in which Carney forcefully declared that Canada was not for sale.
But that didn’t stop Trump from posting an aggressive message just days ago on his social media.
“I told Canada, which very much wants to be part of our fabulous Golden Dome System, that it will cost $61 Billion Dollars if they remain a separate, but unequal, Nation, but will cost ZERO DOLLARS if they become our cherished 51st State. They are considering the offer!” Trump said.
Canadian officials say that they are looking at a partnership as part of wider trade and security deals with the United States.
