Trump May Soon Have Company: Texas Sheriff Recommends Criminal Charges Against DeSantis
Republican governor could land in legal peril for migrant stunt last year
Donald Trump may not have much longer as the only Republican candidate for president under criminal indictment. Chief rival, Ron DeSantis, soon may be joining him.
The Bexar County Sheriff’s Office announced Monday it's filed a criminal case with the Texas county's district attorney over flights the Florida governor arranged transporting 49 undocumented migrants from San Antonio to Martha's Vineyard last September.
DeSantis insisted the flights were part of his administration's migrant relocation efforts and were voluntary, but Javier Salazar, the sheriff for the southern Texas county that includes San Antonio, said his office had opened an investigation into the matter amid concerns migrants were “lured under false pretenses.”
The migrants involved in the DeSantis stunt originated in Texas.
“If you take people and you give them the impression that they’re going to get work, which is what was found, and they were just transporting them around the United States haphazardly, of course charges could be leveled. Not only against the governor, but any of his emissaries,” said attorney and former prosecutor, Michael Wildes.
A spokesperson for the Bear County Sheriff’s Office confirmed charges: “The charge filed is Unlawful Restraint and several accounts were filed, both misdemeanor and felony.”
Trump, who is leading DeSantis by a wide margin for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination, was indicted on 34 felony counts earlier this year in Manhattan.
