'Trump or the Constitution, There Is No Middle on Defending Our Nation Anymore'
Kinzinger calls out fellow Republicans, as those across the spectrum unload on Donald Trump
Rep Adam Kinzinger — just one of two Republicans sitting on the House select committee investigating the events of January 6 — is calling on his GOP colleagues after Donald Trump admitted that he wanted Vice President Mike Pence to “overturn” the 2020 presidential election.
Kinzinger, who is retiring after this year, blasted the latest angry statement from Trump.
Closing the typically vitriolic statement he released Sunday, Trump said that Pence “could have overturned the Election.”
It was a stunning admission from the former president — and one which brought swift rebuke.
“‘He could have overturned the election.’ This is an admission, and a massively un-American statement. It is time for every Republican leader to pick a side… Trump or the Constitution, there is no middle on defending our nation anymore,” Kinzinger tweeted.
The Illinois congressman wasn't the only one to fire back at this stunning admission from Trump.
“This is what prosecutors call guilty knowledge. And also, intent. Predicting Trump will write it off as a)a joke or b)locker room talk and GOP electeds will shake their heads in agreement,” tweeted former US attorney Joyce Vance tweeted.
With Sunday’s statement, Trump has dropped any pretence of “plausible deniability,” according to Juliette Kayyem, a former official at the Department of Homeland Security during the Obama administration, and an analyst at CNN, citing a new essay by prominent “Never Trumper,” Charlie Sykes.
“Excellent essay @SykesCharlie. Trump's incitement first had a plausible deniability aspect (what the field calls #stochasticterrorism), enraging with words but vague as to details. That is no longer true. People can call it what they want (drop stochastic!), but it is not subtle,” she wrote.
Bill Krystol, a lifelong Republican who once worked for former vice president Dan Quayle and published a longtime conservative magazine, turned around and offered Democrats valuable political advice for the upcoming 2022 election.
“Democrats would be well advised to start making Republican disloyalty to the Constitution an issue, taking a page from the playbook of groups such as the Republican Accountability Project...The group has begun to run ads such as this one in Arizona...” the “Never Trumper,” tweeted.
