Trump Sides With Putin As He Calls Russian Leader A 'Genius'
Former president harshly condemned by fellow Republicans
In a move both shocking — and really completely unsurprising — Donald Trump has called Vladimir Putin a “genius” for the latter's fresh aggression in Ukraine.
In direct opposition to President Biden's foreign policy — and Biden's ongoing efforts to deter wider Russian military action in the face of fresh incursions which began Monday — Trump called Putin's invasion of Ukraine “genius” and “very savvy” and referred to him as a “peacekeeper.”
The fact that the former president would stand with an autocratic aggressor invading a sovereign neighbor came under harsh condemnation — including from other Republicans.
“It looks like Trump and his acolytes have chosen Putin and Russia. Every GOP elected official must be asked if they support the leader of their party against their own nation?” asked Fred Wellman, a former official with the pro-democracy and “Never Trumper” Lincoln Project.
Former Republican operative Rick Wilson mocked Trump by using a World War II metaphor.
“‘That Hitler fella may be a bad egg but he sure showed the Sudetenland he means business!’” Wilson tweeted.
The response from the popular Twitter account known as Republicans against Trumpism was even more direct.
“To all the Marco Rubios and Ted Cruzs of the world: you can take your statements criticizing Biden for being 'too weak' on Putin and shove them up your a$$,” it tweeted. “Your dear leader Trump just congratulated Putin’s invasion of [Ukraine], saying: “That’s wonderful. I said, 'How smart is that?”
