Trump Supporter Calls Biden's Pledge To Nominate Black Woman 'Evil'
Journalist recommends civil rights leader for consideration to fill the vacancy
A supporter of Donald Trump's found at his rally Saturday called President Biden's pledge to nominate the first Black woman to the Supreme Court “evil.”
But it's really Republicans who are focused on race, according to a prominent journalist who covers issues of justice and the high court.
A Black woman in line for the Trump rally in Conroe, Texas, criticized Biden’s pledge to nominate a Black woman to the Supreme Court, and said “god” will “give us back his man Trump” as president.
Biden this week pledged to nominate a Black woman to succeed Justice Stephen Breyer, who will be stepping down from service on the Supreme Court after more than 25 years.
However, it's Republicans fervently focused on race, according to Elie Mystal, justice correspondent for The Nation.
“Look, the person that they pick will be immensely qualified. And really what Republicans have to answer for me is why haven’t these people been on their lists? If they’re so interested in finding the best possible person regardless of race, color, creed, regardless of gender, then tell me why doesn’t you vet Sherrilyn Ifill?” Mistal said, referring to a prominent Black civil rights leader. “She is a Harvard educated lawyer that is head of the U.S. Sentencing Commission. Don’t you like to tough on crime sometimes? No. Ketanji Brown Jackson will not give nonwhite, nonmales a shot when they have their time in power, right?
“That’s why President Trump nominated 85 of the 226 judges he nominated, 85 percent were white. Seventy-five percent were male. It is the other side that cares about race, color and creed when making their judicial appointments, not the Democrats. Right? So for Biden to emphasize historically overlooked group, I don’t see what the problem is.”
