Trump Team Has Yet to Come up with a ‘Coherent, Factual, or Legal Defense,’ Prominent Attorney Says
Former president's own words incriminating him, Conway says
Donald Trump and his attorneys have not been able to articulate a “coherent, factual, or legal defense” for willfully mishandling some of the nation's most sensitive documents, including military and nuclear secrets.
That's according to a prominent conservative attorney frequently featured on TV news programs.
The former president has been charged with more than 30 felony counts related to holding onto — and refusing to return — boxes of sensitive and classified federal documents after he left office.
His trial is tentatively scheduled to begin later this year.
More recently, CNN published an audio recording which appears to reveal that Trump illegally shared sensitive war plans at his golf resort in New Jersey with individuals not authorized to see them.
Trump, who is once again running for the Republican presidential nomination, has been giving a variety of interviews on the subject in which he offers shifting and confusing rationales for his alleged wrongdoing.
“He will say anything that comes to his head at a given moment to convince somebody to divert attention and to convince somebody that some accusation against him is untrue,” said George Conway, who rose to prominence as a fierce critic of Trump and is a columnist for the Washington Post. “But the problem is he has no defense. We have been watching this now since last August, and they have yet to come up with a coherent, factual or legal defense to these charges.
“There is just no argument that he has. And that’s why you see him cycling and flailing about and going from saying, ‘Oh, the FBI planted the documents,’ ‘We don’t know if they were really the documents,’ ‘I was entitled to the documents,’ ‘I didn’t have any documents,’” Conway added. “I think he ran out of lies. The last one, when he is saying that these were plans for a golf course or something like that, I mean, you know, yeah, I guess the Pentagon does own some golf courses somewhere, but, yeah, it’s ridiculous. I mean, that’s not what he was talking about and we heard the tape.”
