Tuesday's Other Spectacle: Marjorie Taylor Greene Descends on Manhattan
Georgia Republican also became fodder for comedians
All eyes, naturally, were on the arraignment of Donald Trump in a Manhattan courtroom as the former president had to answer for an astounding 34 felony counts.
However, Trump wasn't the only one creating a spectacle in New York Tuesday, as a certain hard-right congresswoman from Georgia was spotted outside her normal habitat to gin up performative outrage over the her fellow Republican's indictment.
However, mostly what Marjorie Taylor Greene managed merely was to provide the late-night comedians double the jokes, as she made more of the outlandish comments which is her stock-in-trade.
She particularly was mocked for comparing Trump to Jesus Christ.
“Jesus! Jesus! That’s what I’m thinking too: Jesus, what is wrong with this lady? How you going to compare Donald Trump to Jesus? First of all, Jesus walked on water. Donald Trump can barely walk on land,” joked humorist Roy Wood Jr, who this week is guest-hosting Comedy Central's Daily Show. “Now the crazy thing about all of this today is that Donald Trump didn’t even have to come to New York. He could have done the whole arraignment at the crib.”
Wood was referring to reports that Trump had been offered to conduct his arraignment via video call from his Florida home but chose, instead, to appear in person.
In particular, Greene put Trump in the company of some of greatest world leaders who have been arrested, such as the late South African president and civil rights leader, Nelson Mandela, as well as Jesus.
“It’s true. Jesus was arrested,” CBS funnyman Stephen Colbert remarked during his monologue Tuesday night. “I keep forgetting that Jesus was put on trial for getting judas to pay Mary Magdalene not to tell anyone she spanked him with a dead sea scroll.
“Which, of course, led to this famous sermon: ‘Heavenly Father, please remind them to donate generously at jesushchrist.biz. Okay, here I go, ascending to heaven like a dog,’” Colbert wisecracked.
