Twitter Is Descending into a 'Hellscape'
Future of social media service in doubt under Musk's ownership
Increasing numbers of political analysts, commentators and others are expressing serious concerns about the future of Twitter after billionaire Elon Musk finally acquired the social media site late last week.
Musk completed his purchase — valued at $44 billion — late Thursday and has been causing alarm for the popular site ever since.
He tweeted — and since deleted — a post, for instance, regarding a conspiracy theory questioning the brutal attack last week on House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's husband at their San Francisco Calif home.
“You know, it’s amazing to watch someone like Elon Musk who is such a — he’s such a child. He’s so immature. He needs attention all the time,” Tara Setmayer, a political commentator and former Republican strategist, said in an appearance on MSNBC. “These guys with these money, this attention, these daddy issues, the rest of us are held hostage by their issues. And here we have something as important as Twitter, which is an important platform, now descending into the hellscape that he claimed it wouldn’t be.
“He claims that free speech is supposed to be the bedrock of democracy. Yes, maybe, but not hate speech. And that’s what he’s allowing and normalizing,” Setmayer added. “And I’m concerned about the future of Twitter, honestly. I don’t know where this leads, but it doesn’t look like it’s anywhere good as of right now.”
On the same program, host Mehdi Hasan asked former Obama Cabinet official Julian Castro whether the Biden administration or other Democrats could have done more to derail the Musk purchase.
“Julián, I have to ask, could the Biden administration, could Democrats in Congress have said or done anything to prevent or slow down this Musk purchase of Twitter?” Hasan asked.
“I feel like if George Soros had been buying Twitter, the right would’ve made far more noise and express more outrage. Dems just let it happen, as if it’s fine for Twitter to become yet another platform for misinformation and hate,” Hasan said, referring to the billionaire who is frequently used as an antisemitic boogyman among the political right.
