‘Two Very Different Americas’: El-Sayed Responds To Latest Racist Attack
Trump post plays to xenophobia and Islamophobia
Abdul El-Sayed agrees with Donald Trump that there are “two VERY DIFFERENT Americas,” but not in the way Trump meant in a racist social media post directed at the Michigan Senate candidate.
Late Saturday, Trump posted side-by-side photos of he and his wife, Melania, and El-Sayed and his wife, Sarah Jukaku.
The photo of El-Sayed and Jukaku shows the couple sitting together and smiling in a restaurant booth. Jukaku is wearing a traditional hijab.
A former health official, El-Sayed last week emerged as Michigan’s Democratic nominee for US Senate, running against Republican former congressman Mike Rogers.
Trump’s post identified El-Sayed by his full name: Abdulrahman El-Sayed. It’s same racist, xenophobic trope Trump often uses to identify his predecessor, Barack Obama, by Obama’s full name: Barack Hussein Obama.
In a large, red font, Trump captioned the post: “Two VERY DIFFERENT America’s.”
Trump’s Islamophobic intention was clear by using El-Sayed’s full name and showing his wife in her hijab.
Appearing Sunday on CNN, El-Sayed offered his own take on the photos in Trump’s post and Trump’s declaration of “two very different Americas.”
“He’s right. One in which your overlords are two people who don’t like each other but joined in the interest in making billions of dollars off of you, or two people who genuinely love each other enjoying some pancakes together ... “ the Democrat said, taking a swipe at the distance and antipathy between Donald and Melania Trump.
