Ukrainian Journalist Slams Biden's Boundary-Setting Statement In Ukraine War
"A direct confrontation between NATO and Russia is World War III," Biden tweets
A Ukrainian journalist is taking President Biden to task for a statement he issued, in which he pledged the United States would help “defend every inch of NATO territory,” but would refrain from direct military intervention on behalf of embattled Ukraine.
Biden's statement will only “demoralize” Ukrainians, and “emboldens Russia” in its lawless and brutal invasion of the sovereign and democratic Ukraine, according to Olga Tokariuk, an independent journalist and non-resident fellow at the Center for European Policy Analysis.
“I want to be clear: We will defend every inch of NATO territory with the full might of a united and galvanized NATO. But we will not fight a war against Russia in Ukraine. A direct confrontation between NATO and Russia is World War III. And something we must strive to prevent,” Biden tweeted Friday afternoon, more than two weeks into Russian leader Vladimir Putin's brutal incursion into Ukraine, which has seen such alleged atrocities against the Ukrainian people as the use of cluster munitions, and the bombing of a civilian maternity hospital.
Biden has strongly led NATO and other allied nations worldwide in mounting economic sanctions and other steps to punish Russia for its militarism.
But he has also consistently made clear that US forces would not be drawn into direct fighting in Ukraine.
Tokariuk complained that Biden is so explicit — and so public — on that point.
“Why does he have to say it? It only emboldens Russia to escalate and demoralises Ukrainians. Russia perceives it as a sign of weakness. Ukrainians perceive it as if they are being sacrificed. Very bad messaging unworthy of the great country,” she commented, on a retweet of Biden's statement.
Tokariuk is not the only one to feel this way.
“Not a wise strategy to tell your adversary you won’t confront them directly. History tells us otherwise. Ukraine is a sovereign nation, it should be protected by the UN, otherwise what’s the point? The ‘coalition of the willing’ took on Iraq via to the US-led Multi-National,” tweeted a Twitter account known as “Freedom From Prejudice.”
