‘Urgency Is The Instrument of Change’: Maryland Governor Plots Strong Course for Dems
There’s a lesson Democrats can learn from Trump, Moore says
Maryland’s governor traveled to South Carolina this weekend to push his fellow Democrats to embrace a much more urgent and bold approach as they head toward the coming elections.
In embracing urgency, there’s a lesson Democrats can learn from Donald Trump, according to Moore, who was elected in 2022 as Maryland’s first Black chief executive.
He spoke Friday evening as the main speaker at the South Carolina Democratic Party’s Blue Palmetto Dinner.
Moore came with a message that the Democratic Party must change to become more dynamic and powerful.
And while they can oppose Trump on the substance of his right-wing agenda, there is something to be learned from his relentless push for change, he said.
“Urgency is the instrument of change. And do you know who understands that really well? Donald Trump!” Moore said. “I want to be clear: We can — and we must — condemn Donald Trump’s reckless actions. But we will be foolish not to learn from his impatience.”
Trump, he said, does not get bogged down.
“If he can do so much bad in such a small amount of time, why can’t we do such good?” Moore asked. “Now is the time for us to be impatient, too. Let’s not just talk about an alternative. Let’s not just study an alternative. Let’s deliver the alternative.”
South Carolina is the site of one of the nation’s earliest party primaries — it was the Palmetto State that slingshotted a struggling Joe Biden on to the White House in 2020 — but Moore insists he is not running.
He will be up for reelection in Maryland next year. But Moore is willing to offer advice.
The Democratic Party, he said, should not be a party of “no and slow” but of “yes and now.”
“We must be the party of action. Because right now the people of this country are calling on us to act,” he said.
