US Citizens In Ukraine Getting Mixed Messages, Rachel Vindman Says
Administration needs a plan as flights get cancelled and it becomes harder to reach the border, she adds
Despite repeated calls from top US officials to evacuate Ukraine in the face of a potential Russian invasion, Ukrainian officials are spreading a very different message, according to the prominent wife of a well-known former staffer on the White House National Security Council (NSC).
White House national security advisor Jake Sullivan and other top officials from the Biden administration are warning Americans that now is the time to depart Ukraine.
Russian leader Vladimir Putin has massed more than 100,000 troops at the border of Russia's neighbor to the west in what many analysts see as a potential prelude to invasion as Putin looks to stitch the old Soviet Union back together.
“The president is right, the administration is right, the State Department is right – if there are American citizens, dual-nationals and others who do not want to get caught up in fighting [...] they need to leave,” Rep Jason Crow (D-Colo) said.
Rachel Vindman, who rose to prominence after her husband, Alexander, blew the whistle on President Donald Trump's alleged abuses of power related to Ukraine. It was those abuses which led to Trump’s first impeachment, in 2019.
Trump retaliated against Alexander Vindman, who lost his position at the NSC.
“I agree, Representative, they do need to leave but the Ukrainian government is painting a very different picture & [people] are confused. We also need to have plans to evacuate [American citizens] if they’re unable to get out now (many flights are canceled & it’s not easy to get to the border),” tweeted Rachel Vindman, who today hosts her own podcast.
