Vice President Calls for ‘An Immediate Ceasefire’ In Gaza During Selma Observance
More than 30,000 Palestinians have been killed since Israel's operations began
Vice President Kamala Harris called for an “immediate ceasefire” in Israel’s hostilities in Gaza during remarks at the observance of the Bloody Sunday civil rights protest in Selma, Ala.
Harris, and her boss — President Biden — have come under increasing pressure over US support for Israel’s military operations in Gaza, as more than 30,000 Palestinians have been killed since Israel's operations began after the October 7, 2023, Hamas attacks. That includes thousands of women and young children.
Last week, more than 100,000 voters in Michigan’s Democratic presidential primary selected “uncommitted,” to protest the Biden administration’s stance on Israel.
“The threat Hamas poses to the people of Israel must be eliminated. And given the immense scale of suffering in Gaza, there must be an immediate ceasefire for at least the next six weeks, which is what is currently on the table,” Harris said, Sunday, with applause breaking out among the crowd at the mention of “ceasefire.”
“This will get the hostages out and get a significant amount of aid in. This would allow us to build something more enduring to ensure Israel is more secure and to respect the right of the Palestinian people to dignity, freedom, and self-determination,” she added, to more applause. “Hamas claims it wants a ceasefire. Well, there is a deal on the table. And as we have said, Hamas needs to agree to that deal.
“Let’s get a ceasefire. Let’s reunite the hostages with their families. And let’s provide immediate relief to the people of Gaza,” Harris said before her remarks specifically to honor the 59th anniversary of the March 7, 1965, protest which saw Black protesters by white residents.
