Vice President: There’s Something ‘Perverse’ That’s Happened in US Where ‘Strength Looks Like a Bully’
Harris makes case for Biden reelection in 2024
Vice President Kamala Harris struck out at Donald Trump Tuesday, for the Republican’s regular use of fascist language to dehumanize his political opponents and immigrants.
Harris also made a case for the reelection of herself and President Biden.
Trump, the current frontrunner for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination, has been using rhetoric identical to that used by Adolf Hitler and other infamous fascist dictators.
At one rally, he referred to domestic opponents as “vermin,” and at a more recent event, the former president said immigrants coming to the United States are “poisoning the blood of our country.”
The vice president joined the chorus of those across the political spectrum in condemning use of such language — and took direct aim at Trump's ability as a leader.
“So, you know, I was raised, as you know, a child of parents who are active in the Civil Rights Movement, and I was raised knowing that there will be some people who used their voice in a way that is meant to dehumanize — meant to suggest that the vast majority of us don’t have anything in common — when, in fact, the vast majority of us have more in common than what separates us,” Harris said during an on-camera interview with MSNBC host Lawrence O’Donnell. “And I would interpret it, I think, then as I do now, which is, it is language that is meant to divide us.
“It is language that I think people have rightly found similar to the language of Hitler,” she said. “And I think it’s just critically important that we remind each other, including our children, that the true measure of the strength of a leader is based not on who they beat down, but who they lift up.
“Sadly, I think there is something perverse that has happened in our country over the last many years, which is to suggest that strength looks like a bully when, in fact, the real character of a leader is someone who has empathy, who has some level of concern and care for the suffering of other people, and then does something to alleviate that suffering,” Harris said.
She used Trump's actions and rhetoric to frame the stakes of next year's elections.
“We are literally talking about people who are attempting to divide our country in the most crude, frankly, and profound way,” Harris said. “We are talking about those who are intent and purposeful, to attack fundamental freedoms. The freedom to make a decision about your own body. The freedom you love who love openly and with pride. The freedom to be free from fear of violence and hate. The freedom to just be. The freedom to just be.
“These freedoms are all at stake this year. And I think most people understand it and understand power. Elections matter,” she added. “People made their choice in 2020 and we were able to see the progress that we had achieved, with more to do. And I’m counting on everybody to to do what is about exercising their voice, about the direction of our country.”
