Walkout On KBJ: Republicans Unmasked As Racist
Senator previously called out by comedian for trying to have it both ways
Having been properly shamed by — of all people — a late-night comedian, Republicans apparently have decided, once and for all, to just come out and admit themselves to be the racists that they truly are.
It wasn't enough that the vast majority chose to vote against the eminently qualified Ketanji Brown Jackson to become the first Black woman to sit on the Supreme Court.
But after Jackson was confirmed by a vote of 53-47 — with just three Senate Republicans voting to confirm her — all but one walked out of the Senate chamber amidst a standing ovation begun by Democrats.
Only Sen Mitt Romney of Utah — one of those three Republican votes — remained on the Senate floor and applauded along with Democrats.
It was just another reminder of the integrity Romney — the only Republican who voted both times with Democrats to convict former president Donald Trump on impeachment charges — is willing to demonstrate at times when the rest of his party now willing to literally walk away.
Republicans walked out on Brown — showing great petulance and disrespect towards the nation’s 116th Supreme Court justice — apparently because now they have nothing to lose.
After all, their true racist hearts and intent have been fairly exposed now to the American people.
Even the mainstream press are willing to describe what Jackson went through during her confirmation hearings at the hands of Republican senators as “misleading,” “baseless,” and feeding the abhorrent QAnon conspiracy, amongst other accurate adjectives.
Also, Senate Republicans had to be shamed, earlier in the week, out of attempting a “try to have it both ways” approach regarding the Jackson confirmation.
Late-night host Stephen Colbert took direct aim at that strategy on his program, in his monologue by calling out a clip of Republican Sen Roy Blunt, of Missouri, trying to do precisely that.
For Colbert's discussion of Ketanji Brown Jackson, go to about the 4:00-minute mark.
Blunt has “flirted with the idea of being reasonable,” Colbert joked.
The comedian played a clip of an interview with Blunt, in which he acknowledged Jackson is “certainly qualified. She's got a great personality, and I think will be a good colleague on the court.”
“So she’s got your support,” Colbert interjected.
“I won't be supporting her,” Blunt said, going back to the clip.
Blunt continued, “She’s certainly going to be confirmed. I think that it's going to be a high point for the country for her to take her unique perspective to the court.
“I won't be supporting her, but I’ll be joining others in understanding this moment,” the senator added.
That's where Colbert jumped in, wagging his finger.
“No, no!” he said. “You don't get to say you understand anything if you're actively fighting against that thing.”
Good on Colbert, of course.
But shorn of their pretense, Republicans really do have no reason not reveal their true racist, white supremacist intentions through more little embarrassing stunts like the one they pulled Thursday.
