WASHINGTON WATCH: 'Softened' Attitudes Towards Supporting Ukraine Just Prove American Stupidity Lives
There should be no doubt that we support US backing for the war effort
There should have been no American left unelectrified by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky's impassioned and emotional plea to Congress on Wednesday.
Listening to the MSNBC simulcast of Zelensky's speech, I could not help but be immediately drawn into the sense of history and sense of purpose, he and his nation's brave ongoing struggle against Russian aggression and hegemony.
So to read, in the Washington Post the next morning:
That was jarring and actually rather depressing, I can tell you.
That the low-wattage clown car that is the House Republicans is against aid to Ukraine is no surprise.
Those are, after all, the mental deficients like Rep Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga) who usually still take their marching orders from Donald Trump, who last year called Russian leader Vladimir Putin's lawless incursion into democratic Ukraine “genius.”
Much more discouraging is the assertion that US support as a whole for sending major amounts of aid to Ukraine has “softened significantly.”
Especially because this comes at a time when the US government should be increasing its backing of Ukraine, not softening it.
The Ukrainian people's brave prosecution of the war effort against Russia deserves no less.
If anything, we should be providing Ukraine and the Zelensky government ever-more-powerful weapons — especially those arms which are offensive in nature so as to take the fight to Russia and begin inflicting even a hint of the pain which Putin and his troops have been visiting upon the Ukrainians.
The money and materiel we're providing Ukraine is an absolute bargain.
These Americans whose support has softened, just what are they thinking?
Would they have Russia overrun Ukraine essentially unchecked? We allow that to happen and suddenly you'd find Putin next pushing down the borders of actual NATO countries.
I very much doubt that these same doubting Americans would substitute young US boots on the ground for the relatively modest backing we're offering today.
If anything, we're just paying the Ukrainians a fairly reasonable amount to do our dirty work vis-a-vis Putin's Russia for us.
Some of us were hopeful after the “red wave” promised for the recent 2022 midterm elections turned into nothing more than a trickle.
We were hopeful that our fellow Americans were finally getting their heads on straight, after years of flirting with Trump and his brand of no-nothing authoritarianism.
Maybe some of us were too hopeful, because if pretty much all Americans didn't tune into President Zelensky and understand the history and gravity of the moment, maybe those fellow Americans really haven't smartened up enough yet after all.
