‘We Beat ‘Em All’: Exultant Democrats Celebrate Another Successful Election Night
Biden, who's struggled with the polls, joins the celebration
Despite facing lackluster polls for President Biden just days before, Democrats shook that off with another great set of national elections.
Opinion polling published over the weekend showing a poor standing for Biden in several battleground states ahead of next year's presidential election had Democrats shaken.
Yet they came back to outperform Republicans across the country in Tuesday's off-off-year elections.
In one of the night's marquee results, Democrat Andy Beshear was reelected governor of the overwhelmingly Republican state of Kentucky.
Beshear celebrated his win by taking shots at the Republicans who had lined up against him, including the political operations of Kentucky's two Republican US senators, Mitch McConnell and Rand Paul.
“Just look at what we were up against: five super PACs — my opponent’s super PAC, Mitch McConnell’s super PAC, Rand Paul’s super PAC, the Club for Growth, the Republican Governors Association — all running ads full of hate and division. And you know what? We beat ‘em all at the same time,” the governor said.
Meanwhile, voters in the conservative state of Ohio approved a ballot measure which will enshrine the right to reproductive care, including access to abortion, in the state constitution.
And in Virginia, Democrats took control of the full state legislature, dooming Republican Gov Glenn Youngkin’s right-wing culture wars issues, including his desire to limit rights to abortion and rights of the LGBTQ community.
Youngkin's defeat will also likely quiet the chatter that he could somehow jump into the contest for the Republican nomination for president next year.
In Washington, Biden took to social media to celebrate.
“Across the country tonight, democracy won and MAGA lost. Voters vote. Polls don't. Now let's go win next year,” the president wrote, along with a pitch to donate to his reelection campaign.
