‘We Better Take His Threat of A 3rd Term Really Seriously’
Democratic congressman warns about Trump’s claims about remaining in office
Donald Trump’s recent talk about somehow running for a third term as president shouldn’t just be considered idle talk, according to a Democratic congressman.
Rather, Trump’s already shown no respect for the US Constitution, so why shouldn’t Americans expect him to try to illegally cling to power, he said.
Trump floated a potential third term for himself in a phone call over the weekend with Kristen Welker, host of the NBC News program, Meet The Press.
Trump claimed in that interview that “there are methods” for running for a third term despite it being explicitly prohibited by the 22nd Amendment to the US Constitution after President Franklin D Roosevelt became the only person to be elected to more than two terms in the White House.
“I’m not joking,” Trump said.
Rep Ami Bera, of California, said that Americans should oblige Trump in taking him seriously.
“You know, he has shown that he doesn‘t really care about the Constitution, so we better take his threat of a third term really seriously,” he said. “We as Democrats and Republicans ought to come together, hold him to the Constitution, and make sure this doesn‘t happen. But again, I would take him at his word.”
Legal and constitutional scholars have said that there are underhanded ways Trump could try to remain president. But allowing Trump to legally to remain in office beyond January 20, 2029, would require a constitutional amendment to change the current prohibition.
That would be an arduous task and the Constitution hasn’t been amended in decades as a result.
