‘We Celebrate Unions Because Unions Helped Build America’
Democrats blitz battleground states on Labor Day
The Democratic duo running for president and vice president spent Labor Day barnstorming two swing states crucial to their victory in November.
Vice President Kamala Harris and Minnesota Gov Tim Walz separately held rallies in Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin.
And at her rally with union members in Pittsburgh, Harris reunited with her boss, President Biden.
The Labor Day events aimed to reach voters at large, but also specifically sought to cement the Democrats’ ties to a key constituency: organized labor.
“We celebrate unions because unions helped build America, and unions helped build America’s middle class,” Harris said to cheering and applause. “It is true across our nation, and it is true here in Detroit. For generations, in Detroit and across our nation, the brothers and sisters of labor have stood together to righteously demand fair pay, better benefits, and safe working conditions.
“And let me say, every person in our nation has benefitted from that work,” she added, to further cheering and applause from the crowd. “Everywhere I go, I tell people, look, you may not be a union member, you better thank a union member for the five-day workweek. You better thank a union member for sick leave. You better thank a union member for paid leave. You better thank a union member for vacation time.
“Because what we know is, when union wages go up, everybody’s wages go up,” Harris told the enthusiastic gathering. “When union workplaces are safer, every workplace is safer. When unions are strong, America is strong!”
Meanwhile, at the joint appearance he shared with Harris in Pittsburgh, Biden touted the administration’s record of job-creation.
“You know, my dad taught me, my dad would say this all the time. ‘Remember, Joey, a job —‘ and I give you my word on this — ‘a job is as about a lot more than a paycheck. It’s about your dignity.’ It’s about a community. It’s about your place in the community. It’s about being able to look your kid in the eye and say ‘Honey, it’s going to be okay’ and mean it,” the president said. “That’s why Kamala and I are so proud, so proud of the greatest job creation record of any president in a single term in American history.
“Sixteen million new jobs so far! 800,000 manufacturing jobs,” he added.
And, at his event in Milwaukee, Wis., Walz went on the attack against Republican rivals Donald Trump and JD Vance.
“Now, look, we don’t expect everybody to think like us. Now, we know that Donald Trump and J.D. Vance, they have a little bit different vision of America,” Walz said. “I do say this. He does know something about working people, Donald Trump does. He knows how to take advantage of them. That’s what he knows how to do.
“Every single chance these guys have gotten, they’ve waged wars on workers and the middle class. As president, Trump blocked overtime for millions of workers,” he added. “Hell, why pay the bills? He doesn’t pay his own. Why should we pay somebody for overtime?”
