‘We Have a Historic 20 Million People Covered Under the Affordable Care Act’
Biden has built on Obamacare during his presidency
The Biden administration is celebrating a record number of Americans who have health coverage due to the landmark healthcare reform law known as “Obamacare.”
Joe Biden was vice president nearly 14 years ago, when the President Barack Obama signed his signature legislative achievement into law.
Signed into law by Obama on March 23, 2010, it represents the U.S. healthcare system’s most significant regulatory overhaul and expansion of coverage since the enactment of Medicare and Medicaid in 1965.
As president the last few years, Biden has sought to strengthen and build on the Affordable Care Act (ACA), commonly known as “Obamacare.”
In the first months of his presidency, Biden significantly expanded ACA coverage. The $1.9 trillion American Rescue Plan restructured and increased eligibility for subsidies that make health insurance more affordable. Biden also made it easier for people suffering economic dislocation during the pandemic to sign up in “special enrollment periods.” Since then, Obamacare has had a growth spurt.
“Well, the president, President Biden, at the beginning of his administration, chose to build on Obamacare by providing additional support in investment in the ACA. And that has truly paid off,” Neera Tanden, director of the United States Domestic Policy Council, said in a recent on-camera interview with MSNBC. “We have a historic 20 million people covered under the Affordable Care Act. It was great to see the highlights from a decade ago, where Republicans talked about the ACA in really ridiculous and outrageous terms.
“What really the Affordable Care Act has always been about is about providing the security of affordable health care for all Americans, and we are really realizing that through the actions the president has taken to build on Obamacare and make it stronger than ever,” she added.
Meanwhile, Donald Trump — who is on-track to become the Republican nominee for president this year in a rematch against Biden — has said that Obamacare “sucks,” and would once again try to repeal it if he becomes president a second time.
