‘We Won’t Stop Fighting’: Boyle Credits Dem Unity for Sinking Republican Budget
Donald Trump’s “Big, Beautiful Bill” fails vote in key committee
A handful of Republican defectors bailed out on their party’s massive budget bill that would slash federal programs to the bone in order to fund further tax breaks for the ultra-wealthy and corporations.
But a key Democratic congressman doesn’t credit those right-wing holdouts, but rather unity among the Democrats on the House Budget Committee for bringing the Republican spending package to a standstill.
Several right-wing Republicans walked away from Donald Trump’s so-called “Big, Beautiful Bill” Friday during a critical vote to advance the legislation, which would cut more than $880 billion from Medicaid, food assistance and other services for low-income and working-class Americans.
Ultimately, the bill failed by a margin of 16 in favor to 21 against.
Several of the Republican holdouts pledged to continue negotiations with hopes of supporting the legislation on a subsequent vote. They said they voted “no” because they wanted even steeper federal spending cuts.
Rep Brendan Boyle, of Pennsylvania, and ranking Democrat on the budget panel said that it was really Democratic unanimity that stymied the bill’s advance.
He posted a statement about the vote on social media immediately after the bill went down to defeat.
“Budget Committee Democrats stood united to ensure this bill failed to get past our committee,” Boyle’s statement said. “House Republicans are so desperate to rip away health care and food assistance that even the largest cuts in American history aren’t enough for them. They want to see even more middle-class families suffer to fund trillions in tax giveaways to billionaires and big corporations. We won’t stop fighting to block this budget once and for all.”
