We're Reaching Peak Right-wing Privilege, And The Nation's Paying The Price
"Democrats aren’t enforcing stuff because they think it will enflame things," journalist says
It seems like nearly everywhere you turn these days, American right-wingers are committing — and apparently ready to likely get away with — actions which would cost the rest of us tremendous consequences: getting fired from a job, even long prison sentences.
But right now, if you're on the right wing, you're looking likely to skate, or at least walk away with perhaps the barest of wrist-slaps.
Rep Paul Gosar’s office this week posted online ugly and disturbing imagery depicting violence and death against Democratic Rep Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York and President Biden.
But while there's been a huge outcry, Gosar —an Arizona Republican and one of Donald Trump's most stalwart supporters — so far has escaped talk of any official sanction whatsoever for his heinous actions.
Then there are the many election officials getting death threats across the country due to supporters of Donald Trump, the perpetrators of which are not being punished.
A point noted by prominent Star Trek actor and social media political activist, Tim Russ.
“A good number of Trump supporters have threatened to kill election officials and or their families all across the country. That is a verifiable fact. And Not one of them has been arrested and or investigated. If they were minorities, I wonder if that would be the same case…..,” Russ tweeted.
Journalist and podcaster Molly Jong-Fast blames Democrats.
“Democrats aren’t enforcing stuff because they think it will enflame things. What do democrats [sic] think will happen when Republicans return to power?” she wrote.
Journalist and filmmaker Steven Beschloss is expressing frustration with Attorney General Merrick Garland and his efforts to take on right-wing attacks on American voting rights and democracy.
“This is how democracy dies. I admit my impatience for action, in part because I worry the slow pace puts the country in increasing danger. If Merrick Garland can’t step up—to seize this moment—then President Biden should find an Attorney General who can,” Beschloss tweeted.
And then there's the mother of all tests of right-wing privilege in this country right now, the ongoing trial of shooter Kyle Rittenhouse, underway in a courtroom in Kenosha, Wis.
Many observers and analysts are expecting Rittenhouse to either walk or be found guilty only of the most minor offense in connection with shooting and killing two men and wounding another in the arm during confrontations at two locations in August 2020 when he was underage and armed with an AR-15 style rifle.
The judge in the case has demonstrated egregious bias in favor of Rittenhouse.
“The judge’s phone rang during the Rittenhouse trial It was Trump’s theme song which played every time he was on stage. I kid you not Same judge who just aggressively yelled at the prosecutor, prohibited him from calling the victims victims & is acting like Kyle’s defense lawyer,” tweeted Lindy Li, a political commentator who served as a delegate for President Biden.
Correction: It is journalist and filmmaker Steven Beschloss who expressed frustration with Attorney General Merrick Garland. He was misidentified in a previous version of this story.
