‘We’ve Never Been Here Before’: Trump Mugshot Becomes Infamous
Former president booked on charges of trying to overturn Georgia's election result
For the first time in history, a former president of the United States has a mugshot after having been booked in jail on criminal charges.
Donald Trump surrendered at the Fulton County jail in Georgia late Thursday after being indicted on multiple counts in an alleged criminal and racketeering conspiracy to overturn the state's result in the 2020 presidential election, in which Democrat Joe Biden won the state.
Trump was indicted with 18 other defendants in that sprawling case, including former Trump attorney Rudy Giuliani and his one-time White House chief of staff, Mark Meadows.
Very quickly, the mugshot taken of the former president went viral, with Trump himself aiding that effort.
For the first time since his account on the service formerly known as Twitter was reinstated by owner Elon Musk, Trump posted a tweet, featuring the photo of him glowering menacingly, and promoting his personal campaign website as he seeks the Republican presidential nomination next year in a bid to return to the White House.
“The rule of law, and health of our democracy, depends, not just on the conduct of this criminal case, but on our ability as citizens to take this with the heft that it needs. To look at this and see it as American citizens, who prize country above politics. And who, ourselves, prize the law, rather than the fame of any one man,” said MSNBC host Rachel Maddow. “We have never been here before. We are forced to consider, an American president, as a suspected and indicted felon.
“But here we are. Remarkable itself, we have three previous arrests and indictments of Trump, and none of them produced a mugshot. Fulton County decided to do it. That, itself, is a remarkable thing,” she added.
Although it was his first to result in a mugshot, Trump's been indicted and booked three previous times this year in both state and federal courts. In all, he currently faces a total of 91 charges against him.
Former Atlanta mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms remarked on the reaction from Trump's supporters.
“They thought I was Fani Willis. Imagine that,” she said, referring to the prosecutor in Trump's Fulton County case. “A lot of hatred and really bad energy out here, but, you know, when you sign up for public service you don’t get to pick and choose your good days and your bad days.
“I have full confidence in Sheriff Labat,” she added, referring to Patrick “Pat” Labat, sheriff of Fulton County. “Sheriff Labat was actually the corrections chief for Atlanta when I was mayor, so I know them both very well.”
