W.H. Chief of Staff: Our Message to Voters at This Very Tough Time Is that Biden Is Fighting to Bring Down Prices
Democrats struggling with momentum ahead of November midterms
President Biden and his administration acknowledge the financial pain Americans are experiencing, but they are the ones working to get prices back under control.
That's the administration's message heading into the crucial midterm elections, only weeks away now, according to White House Chief of Staff Ron Klain.
The political momentum Democrats have been experiencing over the summer due to the Supreme Court decision to overturn Roe v Wade and upend nearly half a century of national abortion rights appear to be giving way to economic fears which benefit Republicans in the closing weeks of the campaign, according to some public opinion polling.
“Look, I get the fact that prices are high, that's pinching family budgets. I'd also say if you look at where the economy was when we got here, we had 8 percent unemployment. We brought that down to the lowest unemployment rate in 50 years,” Klain said Thursday in an on-camera appearance on MSNBC. “We had people in lines waiting for a box of food. Poverty is down dramatically. We've had record low -- all-time record low -- Hispanic unemployment, and all time record low in black teenage unemployment. So we are putting Americans back to work.
“Businesses are open that were closed two years ago. Schools are open that were closed two years ago. We are trying to get over the gigantic economic impacts of COVID,” Klain added. “We have higher inflation rates in Europe. Inflation is a global problem. But here in America, the president is fighting to bring down prices of everyday things like prescription drugs, like gasoline and I think -- you know, I think that's our message to voters at this very tough time.”
