‘What The Hell Is Wrong with You?’: House Republican Gets Bombarded By Brutal Call-In Questions on C-SPAN
Host fact-checks Andy Biggs in real time
A prominent MAGA Republican congressman faced absolutely brutal questions Friday, as a guest on a call-in TV program.
And things went from bad, to worse, when the program host contradicted false claims, on-camera, made by Rep Andy Biggs, one of those who have propagated the lie that Donald Trump was the true winner of the 2020 presidential election.
Biggs also was an active participant of the so-called “Stop the Steal” rally in Washington DC on January 6, 2021, which preceded the attack on the US Capitol Building later that day to try to block the confirmation of Joe Biden as the next president of the United States.
It began with an angry caller, confronting Biggs over Republican desire for leniency for those who took part in the January 6 insurrection, on the Washington Journal program on the C-SPAN public affairs network.
“Yeah. Yeah. Trump wants to pardon the traitors that have been convicted of seditious conspiracy? Come on, what the hell is wrong with you Republicans?” the caller asked, with host Greta Brawner inviting Biggs to respond.
Biggs replied to the caller, with false claims that no one connected with the insurrection had been convicted of sedition — which was incorrect — before a second caller, identified as an independent voter from Mississippi continued in the same vein.
Here's an excerpt of the incident:
CALLER: “Yeah. Yeah. Trump wants to pardon the traitors that have been convicted of seditious conspiracy? Come on, what the hell is wrong with you Republicans?
BRAWNER: “Congressman?”
BIGGS: “Yeah. Well, I appreciate the call, and I’m not sure I understand what you’re — what you’re saying, but — but I — I think you’re talking about the former president saying that if he gets elected, that he would issue some pardons or clemency to some of the people that were arrested and prosecuted on January 6th. Not all were convicted of seditious treason. In fact, none were. And so that’s important to understand. The second thing I would say is many of them were convicted of misdemeanor trespass. And I think that’s important to understand as well. So I appreciate the call.”
BRAWNER: “David, Ashland, Mississippi, independent.”
CALLER 2: “Thank you for taking my call. Yes, sir. Mr. Biggs, do you think those that conspired in the White House to overthrow the country with Donald Trump and Jeffrey Clark and all that should be held accountable? And exactly why did you ask for a pardon from Mark Meadows?”
BIGGS: “A, I didn’t ask for a pardon. That’s been completely debunked. But, you know, lies persist. So that’s a — that’s going to happen. And I’m big enough to withstand the perpetual lie in that way. And the second thing is, there’s been no indication that anybody attempted to overthrow the government with somebody named Jeff Clark who — whom I don’t believe I’ve ever even met. So, you know, thanks to — thanks for the perpetuation of the false narrative of the left.”
Jeffrey Clark was a top official in the Justice Department during the late Trump administration, while Mark Meadows was Trump's White House chief of staff at the time.
After the calls, the C-SPAN host — Brawner — spoke up to correct the misinformation Biggs was trying to spread.
She pointed out a news headline which indicated that Stewart Rhodes, founder of the far-right organization the Oath Keepers, was found guilty of seditious conspiracy.
BRAWNER: “Congressman, USA Today had this headline back in November of 2022 that Stewart Rhodes, the Oath Keepers founder, was found guilty of seditious conspiracy.”
BIGGS: “Oh, ok. Yeah, well, I didn’t follow that case.”
BRAWNER: “Okay.”
