‘When We Lift Up Women, We Lift Up All of Society’: Emhoff Strongly Defends Wife, the Would-be President
Republicans attacked Kamala Harris for not having biological children of her own
Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff is fiercely defending his wife, Vice President Kamala Harris, after figures on the political right have been attacking her for not being the biological mother of her two step children.
Emhoff first hit back at former Trump’s former White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders at a campaign fundraiser on Wednesday, after she took a swing at Harris for not being the biological parent to Emhoff’s two children from his previous marriage.
Emhoff followed that up with an interview on the ABC News program, Good Morning America.
The incident began when Sanders addressed a Trump rally earlier this week, in which she said that her own kids kept her “humble,” adding: “Unfortunately, Kamala Harris doesn’t have anything keeping her humble.”
In his conversation with Good Morning America’s Michael Strahan, Emhoff defended his wife as well as his role should Harris be elected president and he becomes the nation’s first “first gentleman.”
“A man supporting a woman and lifting up a woman, it’s the right thing to do,” Emhoff said. “And when some woman succeeds, it’s not like a man somewhere is not succeeding. There’s, like, this binary thinking that it’s either/or. No, it’s both. When we lift up women, we lift up all of society.”
Strahan joked with Emhoff that he and Harris both turn 60 this year.
“No, don’t say that!” Emhoff joked back.
“I know, I know. Do you have any plans for that?” Strahan asked.
Emhoff replied: “Yeah, win the election.”
