‘Where the Hell Is Melania?!’: Michael Steele Goes There in Questioning Relationship
Cable host openly wonders about Trump’s relationship with Laura Loomer
Although the spotlight in recent days has been on Donald Trump’s close relationship with a racist online influencer, it took a well-known TV host to ask the question, “How close?”
Michael Steele, the host and commentator on MSNBC who once ran the Republican National Committee, mused aloud whether Trump’s association with Laura Loomer is about more than politics.
A longtime racist figure on among the right-wing, Laura Loomer was seen exiting Trump’s plane ahead of his Tuesday debate against Vice President Kamala Harris. He also brought her along the next day to the observance of the September 11, 2001, attacks in New York.
That raised eyebrows because Loomer is a “9/11 truther,” who described the terrible attacks that day as an “inside job.”
Loomer also attracted ire for a social media post that was deeply racist against Harris, who is of both Black and Indian heritage.
Loomer’s relationship began ginning up gossip with a photo taken of the two of them at Trump’s home at Mar-a-Lago, with the former president’s hand on the waist of the 31-year-old.
Trump is well known for cheating on spouses, and Trump has not been seen for some time alongside his current and third wife, Melania.
While the closeness between Trump and Loomer has amped up online chatter, Steele thrust it into the open Friday with an on-camera appearance on the program of fellow MSNBC host Chris Hayes.
“Donald Trump has these people around him, not because he’s seeking advice from them —not because they’re offering any particular intellectual insight — but because they affirm his worst instincts. They affirm his bad judgment. They tell him what they want,” Steele said. “You showed that picture of Loomer sitting, standing up under Donald Trump. First question crossed my mind was: Where the hell is Melania?! That’s a little too close for a pic. But it’s that kind of closeness that Donald Trump likes.”
