White House Announces $1.1 Billion Package of Weapons and Equipment for Ukraine
More HIMARS -- which has become a hero of the Ukrainian battlefield -- are on the way
The White House announced the latest tranche of US assistance to beleaguered Ukraine Wednesday, as it continues to battle back against Russian leader Vladimir Putin's brutal and lawless invasion.
“And today, the United States is announcing an additional $1.1 billion package of weapons and equipment for Ukraine, through the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative,” White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said during Wednesday's press briefing. “This includes 18 new High Mobility Artillery Rocket System, and also known as HIMARS, which Ukraine has used so effectively on the battlefield. It also includes hundreds of armored vehicles, radars and counter-drone systems.
“We will not be deterred from supporting Ukraine. We will continue to stand with the Ukrainian people and provide them with the security assistance they need to defend themselves for as long as it takes,” Jean-Pierre added.
In total, the United States has now committed approximately $16.9 billion in security assistance to Ukraine since January 2021, including more than $16.2 billion since the beginning of Russia’s unprovoked and brutal invasion on February 24.
Thanks to support from support from the United States and other Western allies, Ukraine has done a remarkable job of repulsing Russian invaders who once were thought to be able to capture Ukraine in just a matter of days.
By contrast, Russian setbacks have become so severe that Putin has had to resort to a so-called “partial mobilization,” or draft, which is proving highly unpopular even in Russia.
