White House Calls Republican Attempts To Attack LGBTQ Rights ‘Abuse’ of Process
Biden will look to repeal new embassy flag restrictions
The White House denounced efforts by congressional Republicans to use must-pass legislation to try to roll back rights for LGBTQ Americans, saying that they “abuse the process.”
The Biden administration said that they were able to fend off more than 50 so-called “policy riders” which right-wing lawmakers tried to attach to the $1.2 trillion bill that President Biden signed Saturday, just barely avoiding a government shutdown.
And the White House said they plans to work with Congress to repeal the single anti-LGBTQ policy which made it into law: barring Pride flags from being flown over US embassies overseas.
The White House discussed the issue in a statement provided to LGBTQ rights activist and journalist, Erin Reed, who reported the statement to her subscribers Sunday.
Far-right Republicans had planned to tuck a number of their socially restrictive measures in the massive federal spending legislation, but were largely frustrated in that attempt, according to the statement.
“President Biden believes it was inappropriate to abuse the process that was essential to keep the government open by including this policy targeting LGBTQI+ Americans,” the statement said. “While it will have no impact on the ability of members of the LGBTQI+ community to serve openly in our embassies or to celebrate Pride, the Administration fought against the inclusion of this policy and we will continue to work with members of Congress to find an opportunity to repeal it.
“We were successful in defeating 50+ other policy riders attacking the LGBTQI+ community that Congressional Republicans attempted to insert in the legislation. President Biden is committed to fighting for LGBTQI+ equality at home and abroad,” the statement to Reed added.
