White House Press Secretary Moved to Tears Defending LGBTQ Kids
Jen Psaki speaks out against "harsh and cruel" state laws
The White House press secretary broke down in tears, in an interview in which she sought to defend lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ+) youth.
Jen Psaki teared up while defending LGBTQ+ kids from the onslaught of Republican-based and oppressive laws targeting them.
Psaki apparently answered a question during an interview with Jessica Yellin, of News Not Noise.
Psaki's answer was released as a brief — but powerful — clip coming in at just 1 minute and 10 seconds.
“The political games and harsh and cruel attempts at laws — or laws that we're seeing in some states, like Florida — that is not a reflection of the country moving to oppose LGBTQ+ communities. That is not what we see in data. That is not factual, and that is not where things stand,” Psaki said, referring to the recently approved law dubbed “Don't Say Gay,” because it bans the teaching of sexual orientation and gender identity in Florida schools, up through third grade. “This is a political wedge issue and an attempt to win a culture war. And they're doing that in a way that is harsh and cruel to a community — of kids, especially.”
That's where Psaki starts to break down, admitting as such on-camera.
“I’m going to get emotional about this issue, because it's horrible,” she said, beginning to cry and her voice audibly breaking. “It's, like, kids who are bullied. All these leaders are taking steps to hurt them, and hurt their lives, and hurt their families.”
Among other laws are measures in other Republican-dominated states curtailing the rights of LGBTQ+ youth — and often transgender youth, in particular.
Psaki began wiping back tears as she continued, “You look at some of these laws in these states, and they're going after parents who are in loving relationships, who have kids. It's completely outrageous. But it is a wedge issue. Sorry, this is an issue that makes me completely crazy.
“But it is an issue that is a political wedge issue. It's not a reflection of where the country is,” Psaki finished, as the clip ends.
