‘Why Is He Bothered by This Tiny Detail?’: Trump Rails Against Honor for Carter
Flags to be flying at half staff on Inauguration Day
Donald Trump has exploded over the fact that flags will be flying at half staff in memory of President Jimmy Carter on the day Trump is set to be inaugurated later this month.
President Biden, as is tradition, ordered that flags across the country be flown at half staff as a sign of mourning for Carter, the nation’s 39th president who passed away late last month at the age of 100.
The flag should fly at half-staff for 30 days at all federal buildings, grounds, and naval vessels throughout the United States and its territories and possessions after the death of the president or a former president.
Carter died on December 29. Inauguration Day coincidentally occurs on January 20.
Trump, however, baselessly claims that Democrats are “giddy” at the prospect that flags will be at half staff on the day that Trump once again is sworn into office.
Trump posted this baseless claim on his social media site Friday.
“The Democrats are all ‘giddy’ about our magnificent American Flag potentially being at ‘half mast’ during my Inauguration,” he posted. “They think it’s so great, and are so happy about it because, in actuality, they don’t love our Country, they only think about themselves.”
MSNBC host Alex Witt questioned on-air why Trump would obsess over the flag on his inauguration during a conversation with commentator Chris Matthews.
“Not to change the tone, Donald Trump appears to be pretty unhappy about that, he is claiming, without any evidence, that Democrats are in fact giddy yet flags being at half staff in his inauguration, adding, nobody wants to see this and no American can be happy about it. Trump says he will attend carter’s funeral, Chris, but why is he bothered by this tiny detail, given how carter approached his own inauguration?” she asked.
“People say nasty things about the other side, that is the way people talk, especially Trump,” Matthews replied.
