With Post-SOTU Ad, Biden Takes New Momentum into the Campaign
Campaign spot first of a $30-million ad buy
President Biden followed his widely praised State of the Union address with not only a series of interviews with prominent journalists, but the release of a new campaign ad as he begins to breathe new life into his reelection bid.
Biden delivered an annual State of the Union speech Thursday evening which both was seen by markedly more Americans, but won widespread praise.
The president followed that up with several interviews over the weekend, and capping off this new momentum with the release of a powerful new ad which tackles concerns about his advanced age head-on and with humor.
The 60-second spot covers a lot of ground for Biden, both highlighting the successes of his presidency and contrasting him with his likely opponent, Republican Donald Trump.
“Look, I’m not a young guy. That’s no secret,” Biden, 81, says in the ad. “But here’s the deal. I understand how to get things done for the American people. I led the country through the COVID crisis. Today, we have the strongest economy in the world.”
The ad is the first in a six-week, $30 million ad buy announced by the campaign this week. It will air on local broadcast and cable television in critical swing states: Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, North Carolina, Nevada, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin, targeting young voters and voters of color in cities like Atlanta, Detroit, Las Vegas, Madison, Philadelphia, Phoenix and Raleigh.
“I’m a Biden skeptic, but that was that was very, very good,” political commentator and “Never Trumper” conservative Charlie Sykes said of the Biden ad. “And also just think about, you know how the mood and — how the narrative has changed in the last week.
“You know, a week ago, you and I were sitting here discussing the freakout of the Democrats about Joe Biden, and think about where we’re at. This reminder how fast things move in politics,” he added. “So you had a good few days for Joe Biden, including that ad and some of the interviews that he’s given, but also the Trump VP audition not going that well.”
Sykes was referring to Sen Katie Britt’s performance during her Republican response to the State of the Union which was so roundly ridiculed that it was mercilessly mocked on NBC’s Saturday Night Live.
