Worst Of Republican Anti-LGBTQ Legislation Still To Come, Congressman Says
Get ready for 300 more bills, Schiff warns
The wave of Republican-fueled legislation aimed at restricting the rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) Americans — especially LGBTQ youth — is nowhere close to finished, according to one prominent Democratic congressman.
Republican Gov Kay Ivey last Friday signed a law making Alabama the latest Republican-dominated state to ban transgender young people, particularly, from receiving medically approved, gender-affirming healthcare.
It joins Arkansas, Idaho, and Utah as states which have laws on the books which restrict transgender youth in some way, either in the care that they can receive, bathrooms they can use or school sports in which they can participate.
In the case of Alabama, the law makes it a felony – punishable by up to a decade in prison – for doctors to provide care including puberty blockers, hormone therapies and surgeries to patients younger than 19 years old.
A federal court last year blocked Arkansas’ law that prohibits health care professionals from providing or even referring transgender young people for medically necessary health care, before that law even took effect.
States across the country, however, are teeing up literally hundreds of additional bills to crack down on LGBTQ youth, according to Rep Adam Schiff (D-Calif).
“Alabama passed a bill criminalizing doctors who treat trans kids. And this legislation – targeting vulnerable children – isn’t unique. Right now, 300 anti-LGBTQ+ bills are pending in state legislatures. The GOP is endangering these kids for political gain. They have no shame.
