‘You Will Remember Where You Were When You Heard The Speech Tonight’
VP wins huge praise for convention address
Political analysts and pundits across the board heaped praise on the nomination acceptance speech Vice President Kamala Harris delivered Thursday night, as well as for the entire high-energy convention Democrats put on this week in Chicago.
Accepting a nomination for president which just weeks ago no one was expecting, Harris delivered a speech on the final night of the Democratic National Convention in Chicago that was part biography, part inspirational and part powerful contrast with her election opponent, Donald Trump.
And, immediately, it became clear that she delivered a political home run.
Along with her running mate, Minnesota Gov Tim Walz, Harris has formed a Democratic ticket which came together suddenly, and only after President Biden dropped out of his race for reelection last month.
The ascendancy of Harris has sparked new energy and enthusiasm for an election which just weeks ago Trump and his running mate, Sen JD Vance of Ohio seemed fated to win.
The vice president has shown a deft verve for campaigning that few might have expected before Biden’s withdrawal.
First with rallies across the country packed with enthusiastic supporters and now her convention speech, Harris has put those fears to rest.
“All right, you will remember where you were when you heard the speech tonight from the vice president of the United States, Kamala Harris really introducing herself to the nation, speaking as much to Republicans and independents as she was to the Democrats who were nominating her tonight, asking Americans to remember how great their country is and to fight for its values,” enthused MSNBC host Rachel Maddow. “You are going to remember where you were on this night. This is an inflection point in history.”
Norah O’Donnell, of CBS News, admitted that she was startled by the Harris speech.
“I can’t remember hearing a major party candidate for president of the United States talk about access to birth control, medication abortion, sepsis that women face, women’s health, children’s health care. All of that,” she said.
CNN’s Anderson Cooper marveled at what Democrats accomplished with their quadrennial nominating convention.
“The energy is quite intense. It has been building pretty much every night, obviously,” he said.
And even some of Harris’s Republican opponents came away impressed.
“No, but to me, this speech tonight by Harris is the true beginning of the campaign for her. This pre-period has been weird because of the way she got into the race. Now it’s on,” said Scott Jennings, a Republican strategist and commentator. “The words and the excerpts that we have seen that she‘s going to stress, I think, are realistic, practical, and common-sense.
“So from this day forward, that is the race, right? If she can get in that zone, she is definitely viable,” he added. “If Trump turns it into something like radical, liberal and dangerous, then she will be something less than that and it will be hard to win.”
Even Meghan McCain, the daughter of one-time Republican presidential nominee John McCain and the former co-host of ABC’s The View, got into the act on social media.
“Maybe republicans just shouldn’t have conventions… just forfeit because I DO NOT KNOW HOW YOU CAN COMPETE WITH THIS! #DNC2024” she posted.
