Zelensky Pleads for Aid to Ukraine At Davos Gathering
Wartime president makes pitch to world's elite as war with Russia nears start of its 3rd year
Ukraine’s wartime leader has traveled to the annual gathering of the world’s elite to win further aid for his country’s effort to repel the ongoing Russian invasion, as that war is just weeks away from entering its third year.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky spoke Tuesday before those gathered in Davos, Switzerland, for the annual World Economic Forum.
Ukrainians have been trying to fend off Russian leader Vladimir Putin’s attempted takeover of their democratic nation since his brutal full-scale invasion began in February 2022.
“Possible directions and even timeline of a new Russian aggression beyond Ukraine become more and more obvious,” Zelensky said. “Let me ask very honestly, ‘Which European nation today can provide a combat-ready army on par with ours, holding back Russia? And how many men and women are your nations ready to send to defend another state and other another nation?’
“And if one must fight against Putin together in the years ahead, isn’t it better to put an end to him and his war strategy now, while our brave men and women are already doing it?” he added. “They are the world’s chance. They are.”
Zelensky told the business leaders, political leaders, economists, celebrities and journalists attending the annual Davos meeting that they have roles to play in the future of Ukraine.
“The war will end with a just and stable peace. And I want you to be the part of this peace -- starting from right now -- to bring the peace closer,” he said. “And we need you in Ukraine -- to build, to reconstruct, to restore our lives. Each of you can be even more successful with Ukraine.
“And these days, right here in such a beautiful country, in Switzerland, we have made a key political contribution to the possibility of ending the war.”
